US PASSPORT AND TRAVEL




As of 2026, U.S. passport holders can travel to over 180 destinations worldwide without needing to apply for a visa in advance. These include many countries in Europe, the Americas, and parts of Asia and Africa. 

The Americas: Canada, Mexico, Belize, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, and most Caribbean nations.

Europe: Most European countries, including the United Kingdom, Albania,

and all Schengen Area nations.

Asia & Oceania: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong,

Australia and New Zealand

Africa & Middle East: This region includes South Africa, Morocco, Senegal, Botswana, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates. 

 

Important 2026 Travel Requirements

ETIAS (Europe): If traveling to the Schengen Area (most of Europe), U.S. citizens now require a valid ETIAS (European Travel Information and authorization System) authorization before departure.

 

Passport Validity: Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of departure.

 

No Passport Required: U.S. citizens can travel to U.S. territories like 

Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam,  and  American Samoa

 without a passport. 

 

The  Schengen Area  (including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain)

operates under a unified set of rules.

 

  • Length of Stay: Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is a rolling limit across the entire zone.
  • ETIAS Status: As of January 2026, the ETIAS application system is not yet operational for U.S. citizens. It is currently projected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • Entry/Exit System (EES): Digital biometric data collection (fingerprints and facial images) is being fully implemented at borders and is expected to be complete by April 10, 2026

 

United Kingdom

 The UK maintains its own separate requirements from the rest of Europe. 

  • Length of Stay: Generally up to 6 months for tourism or business.
  • Mandatory Requirement: As of January 8, 2026, all U.S. citizens must have a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before boarding their flight.
  • Cost & Validity: The UK ETA costs £16 and is valid for two years (or until your passport expires). 

 


Canada  &  Mexico

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short-term stays (typically up to 180 days), though digital entry forms may be required.
